BACKGROUND & PROBLEM
Hot axle or journal bearing failures, commonly referred to as hot box or hot journal incidents, pose significant safety risks in railroad operations. Detecting and addressing these issues promptly is crucial to prevent accidents such as derailments. Traditional training methods for handling these incidents can be costly, time-consuming, and may not fully prepare operators for real-world scenarios. There is a pressing need for an effective training solution that allows operators to experience and respond to these situations safely and efficiently.
SOLUTION OVERVIEW
The Hot Box Task Trainer simulates the detection and handling of hot axle or journal bearing incidents during a locomotive run. Operators receive simulated warnings from a hot box detector and are required to address the issue either directly from their locomotive run. The simulation guides them through proper inspection procedures, including assessing the journal or axle using a tempilstick. This interactive training tool provides hands-on experience in a controlled environment, enhancing readiness and response capabilities.
AFTER USING THIS SIM, STUDENTS WILL:
- Identify and respond appropriately to hot axle or journal bearing warnings.
- Perform correct inspection and assessment of railcar components.
- Utilize tools like tempilsticks to evaluate equipment conditions.
- Conduct necessary repairs and procedures to resolve issues.
- Understand and execute the steps involved in handling various railcar faults.
FEATURES:
- Comprehensive Training Scenarios: Includes inspection, assessment, and troubleshooting of indicated conditions.
- Hands-On Repair Experience: Guides students through conducting repairs and adjustments.
- Air Brake Testing: Allows practice of conducting Air Brake Tests as per regulations.
- Operational Tasks: Enables moving and re-coupling of trains within the simulation.
- Diverse Fault Handling: Covers undesired emergency brake applications, speed instrument faults, trainline connections, pneumatic issues, loss of ATP, and more.
