3D Interactive Tech Talk – VR for Technician Training, Scuba Diving

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

DTE Energy Applying VR to Train the Next Generation of Energy Workers

DTE Energy is teaming up with Vectorform for “High Consequence VR Training” – i.e., virtual training for situations that are particularly dangerous, like standing atop a wind turbine, or repairing downed power lines. The company is excited at the prospect of using VR to train the incoming generation of workers who will replace those who are retiring over the next 5-7 years. These younger workers already understand VR technology and the gaming principles included in its application. But DTE and Vectorform see other uses for the technology too. Those interested in a job can give it a virtual try first, to see if they really like it. And executives can use VR to better understand life “in the field,” which could guide decision-making in disaster scenarios.

MIT Student Brings Scuba Diving to Virtual and Physical Life

Virtual reality hasn’t yet become part of our everyday lives, but already the use cases are being thoroughly explored and expanded with the addition of physical stimuli. The latest in this vein is Amphibian, a scuba diving simulator which uses Oculus Rift DK2 headgear for the visual portion, and a specialized spring platform with elastic bands that mimics the physical sensations of being underwater. Developed by Dhruv Jain, a master of science candidate at MIT, Amphibian offers a realistic experience to those afraid of water, or physically unfit for scuba diving. It’s clear why Jain wants to make scuba accessible to all: “[E]very time I dive, I find the underwater experience to be rejuvenating; it is emotional and almost spiritual.” And now, virtual.
