3D Interactive Tech Talk – VR in Art, Empowering Women

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

VR Technology Lets Artists Literally Become Immersed in their Work
Traditionally, artists have been confined to two dimensions when creating sketches. However, using VR, artists are able to become completely immersed in their creations and bring their drawings to life. “When you draw, you’re expressing something that’s real and visceral,” says Disney animator Glen Keane. No surprise then that Keane has often wished the “flatness of the paper could go away.” Using VR goggles Keane is able to “step into the paper,” shedding the restrictions of two-dimensional paper to create a “sculptural drawing.”

What does this mean for storytelling, Keane wonders? That it’s future is in immersive 3D.

“My Voice, My Choice,” My Virtual Reality: How VR is Empowering Young Women
A new VR program called “My Voice, My Choice” is giving young women the opportunity to practice asserting their dominance over sexual predators. Seventy-eight high school females received assertive resistance training in small groups led by a trained facilitator, which then transitioned into VR simulations. The program used VR goggles to place 42 of the women in situations ranging from a stranger asking for their phone number to increasingly aggressive advances. The remaining 36 were part of the control group. Although the program hasn’t been tested extensively, the early results are extremely promising. The young women who went through the VR training felt more confident in their ability to resist a sexual predator, and this effect continued (and was tracked) for three months after the training.
