VR Where You Least Expect It

Lead LargeEven before the highly anticipated recent release of the Oculus Rift headset, the applications for virtual reality in fields like gaming and entertainment were well known. But the potential of VR is being explored by numerous other industries, where a more immersive experience could lend an advantage. From virtual workspaces that allow workers to shut out background noise and distractions, to crime scene reconstructions for jurors to explore at trial – organizations like the University of Zurich and Emblamatic Group are looking ahead to other use case for VR tech. And companies like Virtalis and Unimersiv are continuing to apply VR to training and education efforts. Even more exciting, VR may be a safe, non-addictive, alternative to pain medications. It will be exciting to see what other use cases come to light as this technology takes hold.

Will VR and AR Become the New Normal?

It’s nearly impossible to imagine our lives without computers, the Internet, and smartphones. Will VR and AR follow suit? Heather Bellini of Goldman Sachs Research sees virtual and augmented reality as the next can’t-live-without technology that will transform our world. Though early efforts made mainstream integration of these technologies feel far off, Bellini points out that tech advances like faster processors, chips and graphics cards are bringing us closer to a time of widespread use. Experts expect the VR and AR market to reach $80 billion by 2025, and believe it will be the equivalent of what desktop PCs are today.
