3D Interactive Tech Talk – Lucasfilm, Martian VR

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

Lucasfilm Foray Into VR Exactly What the Industry Is Dying For

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy might be hitting the nail on the head when she states that George Lucas “recognized that storytelling and technological innovation go hand in hand.” What better reason could there be for Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic to create the ILM Experience Lab than purely to see how they can use VR technology to enhance entertainment and storytelling? The probability that it will inspire record VR headset sales is just a bonus. Movie fans will be able to experience Lucas’ popular worlds in living (virtual) color. Or they could try out a pet Velociraptor without “without risking life and limb.” Of course, safety is an advantage with simulated workplace training too – but pet raptors are much more fun.
Needless to say, innovation in immersive experiences will help the training industry greatly, putting trainees into the action directly.

Fox Creates An “Out of This World” VR Experience

In fact, they want it to do everything, in the sense that they’ve created a standalone VR experience versus the typical VR-enhanced Hollywood marketing campaign. The Martian VR Experience endeavors to raise the bar with regard to VR in Hollywood – and by all accounts it does. It will be interesting to see who raises it next, and how.
