Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.
If you’re not into gaming, you probably don’t realize just how much the technology behind it is impacting the world – and how much it stands to influence the way we work in the future. From pushing the creation of more powerful computer systems, and bringing prices down on more advanced everyday models, to inspiring educational and training methodologies, we have gaming to thank for a lot. Add virtual and augmented reality into the mix and things really get interesting. Expect things like virtual meetings, inspired by immersive 3-D games that use gear like the Oculus Rift Headset. And that’s just the beginning.
Department of Education Looks to Gaming, AR and VR to Teach Academic Skills
The Department of Education is calling on the VR, gaming and education tech communities to contribute to the EdSim Challenge. The contest runs through January 17, and seeks “virtual and augmented reality-based educational experiences that teach academic and technical skills” to prepare students for the modern workforce. They hope for proof-of-concept, educational 3D simulations and multiplayer video games that are easy to use, and as engaging as the Internet. Five finalists will win $50,000 and the grand prize winner will receive $430,000.
