3D Interactive Tech Talk – Bright Future for AR/VR

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

The Future of AR and VR Are BOTH Looking Great

vr-1With both the virtual and augmented reality markets poised for explosive growth in the next few years, many are betting on AR being the more popular and useful option. And the one offering the greatest projected earnings (attracting $120 billion of the $150 billion expected from both technologies by 2020). But while AR has huge potential, those relegating VR applications to gaming and entertainment “only” are discounting numerous areas for VR to shine – like education, medical, disaster rescue, and more – especially with the advent of non-immersive VR options, which are just around the corner.

For a utilitarian airline model like easyJet, keeping business expenses low is crucial to keeping prices low for customers. One way easyJet is doing that is by looking to emerging technologies. Virtual reality training would give flight crews a head start so they’re more familiar when they live train aboard the aircraft, and drones equipped with onboard laser scanners would offer real-time 3D mapping of aircraft to identify damaged areas and stream recorded footage back to engineers. Both of these options would save money by cutting down on the time an aircraft is pulled from rotation for training and repairs, among other things.
