3D Interactive Tech Talk – Virtual Training for Ambulances, Flight Emergencies

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

From VR to the ER

Arguably the best use case for simulation training is to safely practice dangerous scenarios until responses are ingrained. Virtual Drive is a simulation program historically used by long-haul truckers, but now being used to safely train Pennsylvania EMTs and paramedics to drive in a variety of real-world conditions. Ambulances are the most expensive and dangerous equipment used by EMTs and paramedics, and ambulance crashes average once per day in the state. In Western Pennsylvania, 135 ambulance services plan to train 16 drivers per day using Virtual Drive. Within a few years they hope to complete training in all Pennsylvania counties.

A 3D App to Soothe – or Worsen – Your Fear of Flying

Anyone who’s flown – and some who haven’t – has at some point wondered what they’d do during a flight emergency. It’s completely reasonable to think about the worst case scenario as flight attendants go through their pre-flight demonstration, and now the Prepare for Impact app lets you live it – virtually of course. The 3D game simulates various flight-related emergencies from a cabin fire to a water crash. Users must guide their character through these situations as quickly and safely as possible. The game may be unsettling to those afraid of flying, but it provides a lot of useful information, and sometimes preparedness equals peace of mind. The game is available in the Apple Store and Google Play.
