3D Interactive Tech Talk – VR for Astronaut & Petroleum Training

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

One Small Step for VR, One Giant Leap for Astronauts

moonbasealpha2VR plays a major role in preparing astronauts for space – but though there’s a game-like feel to much of the training, it’s not all fun. Much of astronauts’ virtual training is to prepare them for dealing with systems failures, including the tragic possibility of a fatal injury or death in space. Even if the chances are slim, the training leaves them ready to remain calm and practical in the face of harrowing circumstances. On the brighter side, NASA has teamed up with Microsoft HoloLens to educate youth by bringing data from the Curiosity rover on Mars home to Earth. Along with games like Moonbase Alpha and Station Spacewalk Game, the HoloLens is part of NASA’s endeavor to create excitement around space education and exploration – and inspire the next generation of astronauts.

VR Leaves Petroleum Technology Students Room for Mistakes
A 3D simulation is helping Petroleum Technology students at Pierpoint Community and Technological College prepare for the future. The opportunity for students to simulate real-world tasks, like checking for faulty equipment or poor gas flow, gives them a sense of familiarity they otherwise wouldn’t have until they arrive at the workplace. They can troubleshoot dangerous scenarios safely, while building their problem-solving skills and confidence – huge advantages in a field like Petroleum Technology, where there is little room for mistakes. Students compare the technology to video games, which makes it easy for them to maneuver as they learn to interact with virtual characters and situations they’ll encounter soon enough in reality.
