Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

VR and AR Taking Increasing Share of Healthcare Industry Market

Augmented-and-Virtual-Reality-333x333Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are increasingly important in healthcare, according to a new report by Industry ARC. Projections put their share of that market at more than $2.5 billion by the end of this decade. Dental Simulator, a VR product, is the most profitable of the healthcare applications currently in use, while robotic surgery is the fastest growing market. Both Oculus Rift and Google Glass are seen as having significant potential in the healthcare market, which is currently biggest in North America – though it is anticipated that the Asian markets will experience the highest rate of growth before 2020.

VR Company Captures First 360-degree Surgery for Training

VRSurgery_Header-790x300There are huge opportunities for the medical industry to benefit from VR technology – something newly announced company Medical Realities demonstrated at the London Wearable Technology show. Their product, The Virtual Surgeon, uses augmented reality and VR head-mounted displays (HMD), such as Oculus Rift, to allow surgeons to witness a captured 360-degree surgical operation. Building on founder Dr. Shafi Ahmed’s previous “first” – a surgical live-stream using Google Glass AR HMD – the company believes that VR raises the stakes of using simulation in medical training. Definitely a company to watch.
