3D Interactive Tech Talk – AR in Navy, Air Force simulations

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

Implications of AR Training for the Navy

sidebarphotoThe Navy and Huntington Ingalls have recently teamed up to explore practical applications for augmented reality in the Navy’s NAVAIR division. Though AR has been used by shipbuilders, Cmdr. Henry Phillips believes it could also help sailors learn a number of things – from operating equipment to diagnosing and fixing problems in real-time. The three-year cooperative agreement, “allows us to share resources with each other without necessarily having another contractual relationship,” Phillips notes. And, of course, to find out just how far AR can take the Navy in its training endeavors.

Simulation Offers Improved Training, Cost Savings for Air Force

258w_q75De-icing training is very important for Air Force Airmen working in colder climates. According to Tech. Sgt. David Lamb, 92nd MXG MQTP instructor, “If anything is left on the plane, it can interfere with the aircraft’s lift and be potentially dangerous.” It’s also very expensive – but a de-icer simulator being used by the 92nd Maintenance Group at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington is changing that. Using technology similar to video games, but with controls that are an exact replica of a de-icer cab, the simulator gives pilots the opportunity to learn the procedure safely, while still training their muscle memory. Airmen can achieve “a level they wouldn’t normally get to in a short time period.” And the Air Force saves money on de-icing fluid (and retrieval), manpower, diesel fuel, and maintenance for training aircraft wear and tear. The simulator can also be accessed for refresher training during the summer months.
