Game Tech to Battle Ebola

It seems a very unlikely pairing: fighting the Ebola outbreak and creating videogames. But these two disparate elements came together over a 48-hour Hackathon as coders, designers, graphic artists and epidemiologists worked together in Seattle to create a digital tutorial and simulation prototype for treating Ebola. Organized by Shift Labs, the simulations give aid workers a visual representation of the types of issues that may be encountered in an Ebola situation. Very timely!

Virtual reality seemed destined for an early grave. Most commonly associated with video games, technology and cost issues seemed to doom the idea of headset-based VR. But after Oculus reanimated VR in 2012, it has slowly gained strength and traction in many areas. Therapists are using VR to help patients with issues such as fear of flying or PTSD; classrooms are taking field trips without ever leaving the school; and marketers can put you behind the wheel of their new model without ever entering the showroom.
