3D Interactive Tech Talk – AR in Hyundai Cars, Magic Leap Demo

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

Augmented Reality Behind the Wheel
Nobody enjoys flipping through the owner’s manual in their car, so Hyundai has turned their owner’s manual into an interactive, augmented reality app.

Though Hyundai isn’t the first to use this technology, taking up the torch lit by Opel in 2013 brings the virtual owner’s manual one step closer to becoming the norm. The app is currently limited to their 2015 Sonata model, but Hyundai plans to expand the technology to other vehicles.

Secret’s Out: Augmented Reality Technology is Here
In case you missed it – Magic Leap, the promising AR startup backed by Google (and others), has released a new short video demonstrating exactly what AR can do – and what Magic Leap can do without special effects support.

Their original concept video in March showed augmented reality being used to check email and play an amazingly realistic first-person shooter game. But that video had help from the brilliant folks at Weta Workshop.

The newest video offers an unedited look at Magic Leap’s augmented reality capabilities. While not as spectacular as the concept video, the potential is certainly there. It’s unclear when this technology will be available to consumers, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
