3D Interactive Tech Talk – 3D Virtual Training for BMW, McDonalds

Welcome to our recurring post, 3D Interactive Tech Talk, highlighting how interactive technology is being used right now and where it’s headed.

BMW Takes Dealers Inside Hybrid Engines Via 3D Interactive Technology
“3D interactive training …is the easiest way to make technology tangible and facilitates retention of information and comprehension of the new technology. We foresee increased use of virtual and interactive films in training courses in order for easier and quicker understanding of complex correlations and processes.” – MD, BMW Group Asia

P90146436 Highres 640x427As BMW charges into further advancing electric mobility and automatic driving, training has become a primary concern. Though the company wants to train their dealers to be fluent in new electric and plug-in hybrid technology, these features are too deep in the body of the vehicle to be seen. BMW is using 3D Interactive Training, along with 3D glasses, to let dealers experience how this technology works in a tangible way. Working closely with managers to impart the importance of making time for training, as well as to help create that time, the auto manufacturer also uses post-training surveys to understand how employees view 3D Interactive Training, and what can be improved.

Fast food giant McDonald’s is making a change in its newer stores – made-to-order food, versus orders stacked up under heat lamps awaiting purchase. This change requires managers to “think differently” about the ratio of staff at the counter or in the kitchen at any given time. To roll out the change, McDonald’s will go live with a 3D virtual reality replica of the new restaurants in September – giving staff the opportunity to train in simulated conditions to get up to speed with this new approach. The chain has had prior success with gamification in the training of its new till, saving “roughly £1/2m in direct training costs.” Though the initial spend on the 3D virtual environment will be higher, the long-term savings should be equally substantial.
