Komatsu America Corp. is a U.S. subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd., the world’s second largest manufacturer and supplier of earth-moving equipment, consisting of construction, mining and compact construction equipment. Komatsu America also serves forklift and forestry markets. Through its distributor network, Komatsu offers a state-of-the-art parts and service program to support its equipment.

PROBLEM: Komatsu integrated a Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Injector in their Tier 4 engines. They needed an intuitive training tool to familiarize Komatsu mechanics and operators on these equipment updates.

SOLUTION: Stepping away from traditional paper-based manuals and non-interactive learning, they deployed a 3D interactive application (built by Heartwood) that shows technicians how the DEF injector reduces NOx emissions and the complex theory (technology & chemistry) behind soot and nitrogen-oxide reduction in their product. This interactive element is a small piece of a larger course.

EXPECTED RESULTS:
1. 3D interactivity will allow distributors & technical instructors to virtually discover and teach features about the engine.
2. Students will locate, explore and interact with the machine models as they would during live classroom lab exercises.

EXPECTED BENEFITS:
1. Train in less time, virtually – reducing direct training expenses.
2. Avoid wear & tear on demonstration machines and limiting costly damage to those machines.

STATUS: Komatsu’s customer training center in Cartersville, GA is blending the 3D interactive training with classroom lecture sessions and hands-on/practical lab exercises. Sales reps also have access to product knowledge anytime, anywhere with just-in-time mobile apps.

CMS WiRE interviewed Komatsu’s Training Director and he said – “The market has been experiencing a shift, with everything available on demand — and training is really no different from any other product knowledge you’d want, and need, right away…. We need to distribute Apps instead of Plane Tickets!”. Read the full interview here!
